Five star luxury bathroom in Llantwit Major

After a successful kitchen renovation the previous year, Jo and Ian called us back to their Grade II listed home on the outskirts of Llantwit Major. This time for the master bathroom and a small adjoining room. The wish list was ambitious for the space available: a luxurious walk-in shower, a freestanding bath and a spectacular his-and-hers vanity unit, all within tight, characterful dimensions.

Listed buildings bring genuinely unique constraints. Structural changes, window choices and drainage solutions all require authority permission, and the angle of the vaulted ceiling limited the usable wall space further still. To avoid conflict with the planning authority, major plumbing stayed close to its original position, so our designer focused her efforts on decorative elements and product choice instead. Giant marble-effect tiles from Mandarin Stone, matt black brassware and a bespoke Pronorm Y-Line vanity unit with fluted walnut-effect detailing and a seamless Silestone double-sink top.

The adjoining room became a cosy dressing area, with bespoke wardrobes built precisely around the sloped ceiling and oak beams. It's a genuinely five-star result. Proof that period constraints can sharpen good design rather than limit it.
