Open-plan kitchens are increasingly the default for anyone extending to the rear of their home. Mr and Mrs Chowdrey's Swansea project shows exactly why: a genuinely multifunctional space built around a busy family's real day-to-day life, not just a bigger room for its own sake.
The contemporary handleless German kitchen keeps its lines simple and proportional, letting the eye flow naturally around the room. White and lava black cabinetry creates a clean, stylish contrast, while a jade glass splashback and upstand adds a considered pop of colour that draws the eye without overwhelming the calm, minimalist palette. Complementary greys and blues carry that same calm feeling through into the adjoining entertainment and dining area.
One clear instruction shaped the whole design: no wall cabinets. Instead, open shelving blends almost invisibly into the walls, giving Mr and Mrs Chowdrey the freedom to accessorise the space however they like and change the look whenever the mood takes them. It's a good example of designing for flexibility as
much as for the day the kitchen is first installed — a room built to evolve with the family living in it.
