Painted In-frame kitchen

Mr and Mrs Cheeseman were refurbishing a stunning period cottage in Llanblethian, near Cowbridge. They came to the project with an open mind, all be it with two firm constraints. The cottage demanded a traditional design and their beloved Aga stove was staying exactly where it was, right at the heart of the room.

The result is a traditional in-frame kitchen with oak timber doors in a soft light blue finish. Classic detailing on selected cabinets with carefully placed lighting to bring out every period feature. Knowing the Aga alone wouldn't suit modern cooking habits, we built in a discreet induction hob alongside it and set contemporary ovens within full-height cabinetry to the rear. Allowing for practical, everyday cooking to take place comfortably next to a much-loved centrepiece.

Period properties bring their own honest challenges: here, original lime and lath plasterwork meant not a single wall in the room was truly straight. Character worth preserving, but a real test when fitting cabinetry that needs to sit plumb and true. Getting a kitchen like this right takes patience and genuine craft. This is exactly the kind of considered, hands-on problem-solving a period home deserves, rather than a standard fit that ignores its quirks.
